The U.S. just saw a small but notable bump in the latest World Happiness Report, moving up to 23rd place globally after ranking 24th last year. While that’s technically progress, the bigger picture is more complicated — the country still sits outside the top 20, with many European and smaller nations reporting higher overall well-being.  

Experts say factors like social connection, trust, and mental health — especially among younger people — continue to drag U.S. happiness down despite economic strength.

A new global report is sounding the alarm, saying social media platforms like Meta, Facebook, and X may not be safe for teens — and the impact could be happening on a massive scale. Researchers found “overwhelming evidence” of direct harms like cyberbullying and exploitation, along with indirect effects like anxiety and depression linked to heavy use.

The study also points to addictive app features that can disrupt sleep, mood, and overall well-being, especially for younger users still developing emotionally. While the debate isn’t settled, experts say the growing body of research is strong enough to push for serious changes in how platforms are designed and regulated.
