Cher's battle to protect her son is hitting some legal roadblocks. A Los Angeles judge denied Cher's request for a temporary conservatorship over her 49-year-old son Elijah Blue Allman, who appeared at the hearing remotely from a psychiatric hospital, citing a lack of "sufficient urgency" to justify taking control of his finances.

Cher filed the petition claiming Elijah's mental health, finances, and substance use have severely deteriorated since their 2024 private settlement — but the ruling was made without prejudice, meaning she can try again. This case is a heartbreaking reminder of how helpless families can feel watching a loved one struggle with addiction and mental illness.

📖 What’s The Meaning

A mental health conservatorship is a court-ordered arrangement where an appointed conservator makes personal and/or financial decisions for an adult incapable of providing for their own basic needs (food, clothing, shelter) due to a severe mental disorder. It’s used for "gravely disabled" individuals, often involving schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and can authorize involuntary treatment or secure, locked facility placement.

Those petitioning for a conservatorship/guardianship must meet a high legal burden of proof demonstrating to a judge a person’s “incapacity." Conservatorships/guardianships don’t have to be permanent; removing them can be a key motivator for individuals to make positive choices.
