Perez Hilton was hospitalized after a concerning TikTok livestream prompted multiple viewers to contact authorities. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded, treated the situation as a mental health crisis, and worked with crisis professionals to help ensure he received medical care and support.

The incident has sparked conversations about the challenges of experiencing a mental health crisis in a public, online space — where thousands of people may witness someone’s most vulnerable moments.

More young people are turning to AI chatbots for mental health support, drawn by the convenience, privacy, and ability to get a response anytime — even when reaching a human therapist feels difficult. A growing body of research shows that many teens and young adults are using AI to talk through stress, anxiety, emotions, and personal challenges, with some reporting that the conversations feel helpful.

But experts warn that AI should be viewed as a support tool, not a replacement for a trained mental health professional. Questions around accuracy, privacy, emotional dependence, and whether AI can safely handle serious mental health concerns are still being studied.

The mother at the center of Ohio’s “house of horrors” case has requested a mental health evaluation to determine whether she is competent to stand trial. Her attorney says the evaluation is intended to assess whether mental health concerns may affect her ability to understand the legal proceedings and participate in her defense.

The case involves allegations of severe neglect involving her 16 children, and the request highlights a complex question often seen in the legal system: how courts should balance accountability, public safety, and understanding the role mental health may play in a person’s actions.

Myth or Fact

MYTH: Everyone gets depressed as they grow older. It’s just part of the aging process.

FACT: Depression is never an inevitable part of aging. Older adults may have a greater risk of depression because they experience so many changes in roles and social networks. If an older adult experiences depression, they need the same support as anyone else.
