Being the “family peacemaker” might seem like a positive role, but therapists say it can quietly take a toll on mental health. People who grow up smoothing over conflict often learn early to read the room and manage everyone else’s emotions, sometimes feeling responsible for keeping the entire family calm. Over time, constantly putting others first can lead to burnout, resentment, and emotional exhaustion, especially when the peacemaker’s own needs get pushed aside.

California voters approved Proposition 1, a $6.4 billion plan designed to expand mental-health treatment facilities and housing for people experiencing homelessness — but many of the projects promised are now facing delays or cancellations. Several developments that were supposed to open in 2025 to serve vulnerable groups such as foster youth, new mothers, and unhoused individuals haven’t moved forward as expected. Critics say bureaucratic hurdles and complicated funding processes have slowed the rollout, raising concerns about whether urgently needed mental-health services will arrive in time.
